What is Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery?

Opr. Dr. Mehmet ÖZGENÇ -

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical method used to treat chronic sinusitis and other sinus disorders. FESS aims to open the natural drainage pathways of the sinuses, allowing for healthy drainage. The term “functional” indicates that this surgery focuses only on diseased tissues, aiming to preserve healthy tissue as much as possible.

In this procedure, a thin endoscope is inserted through the nose to access the sinuses. The endoscope has a small camera at the tip, enabling the surgeon to view the inside of the nose and sinuses in detail. Using small surgical instruments, the surgeon can address blockages, polyps, and inflamed or infected tissue in the sinuses. By enlarging the sinus openings, natural drainage is restored.

Advantages of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery:

  • Minimally Invasive: With no external incisions, recovery is faster, and there is less pain.
  • Targeted Treatment: Only diseased tissue is removed, preserving healthy tissue and reducing the risk of complications.
  • Quick Recovery: Without external incisions, patients generally recover faster and can return to daily activities sooner.
  • Effective Visualization: The endoscope provides direct visualization of the sinuses, enhancing surgical success.

Who Is It For?

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery may be recommended for:

  • Chronic Sinusitis: Patients with chronic sinusitis who do not respond to prolonged medical treatment.
  • Sinus Polyps: Patients with polyps in the sinuses causing blockages.
  • Anatomical Blockages: Patients with structural issues, such as a deviated septum, that impair sinus drainage.
  • Recurrent Infections: Patients experiencing frequent sinus infections that lower quality of life.

This surgical method is especially preferred as an effective and safe treatment option in cases where medical treatment is insufficient.
